Say what you like about John Oliver, but he’s not afraid to speak his mind.
The host of HBO’s Last Week Tonight series has been living in the US for almost a decade now, but he still has some very strong feelings about his homeland and he aired them for the world to see on Sunday night.
The former Daily Show correspondent began the programme referencing the recent divide among the British people, who voted in favour of leaving the European Union by a margin of 52% to 48%, and the push from some quarters for both Scotland and Northern Ireland to leave the UK, quipping:
“Let us begin straightaway with the United Kingdom, a place whose very name, after this week’s events, is beginning to sound a bit sarcastic.”
Oliver then turned his attention to David Cameron, who announced he was stepping down from the position of Prime Minister in the wake of the successful Leave vote.
“David Cameron announced he would be stepping down in the wake of the vote, which should make me happy, but in this situation, it doesn’t,” he said. “It’s like catching an ice cream cone out of the air because a child was hit by a car. I mean, I’ll eat it, I’ll eat it – but it’s tainted somehow.”
But that’s not all he had in store for the outgoing Tory leader, as he made quite a blunt reference to certain claims about Cameron’s allegedly unsavoury relationship with a certain pig.
And the comedian is clearly unhappy that the Leave campaigners are already backtracking on their pre-referendum promises, going in on both Boris Johnson and Nigel Farage too.
