Each season will move back in time
The IT prequel series ‘Welcome to Derry’ is already planned to run for three seasons, according to creator Andy Muschetti.
One of the most anticipated TV releases of 2025, the series from Warner Bros. Television is set in the fictional Maine town of Derry, where Stephen King’s classic horror novel takes place.
The show will follow the events that lead up to the story fans know from the novel and subsequent films, and will see Bill Skarsgard reprise his role as the terrifying Pennywise.
Now, one of the show’s creators Andy Muschietti, who directed both IT movies, has revealed that Welcome to Derry is already planned to be a three-season project.
Speaking to Radio TU, the director explained that after the first season, which is set in 1962 in the time leading up to the events of IT: Chapter One, the plan is for the second and third seasons to jump back in time to 1935 and 1908 respectively.
He said: “It’s a story that’s based on the interludes of the book. The interludes are basically chapters that reflect Mike Hanlon’s research. They’re fragments of his research. For 27 years, it’s the guy trying to figure out what it is, what did it, who did it, who saw it, and all that stuff.
“So they talk about catastrophic events from the past, like the fire in the Black Spot…. the massacre of the Bradley Gang, a gang of bank robbers in the ’30s… and the explosion of the Kitchener Ironworks.
“Every time [Pennywise] comes out of hibernation, there is a catastrophic event that happens at the beginning of that cycle.”
Msuchiette added: “There’s a reason why the story is told backwards. So the first season is 1962, the second season is 1935, and the third season is 1908.”
Just like with any TV project, whether or not we are treated to all three seasons planned will probably depend on how well the first series performs.
But Muschietti, who has created Welcome to Derry alongside his sister Barbara and screenwriter Jason Fuchs, said Warner Bros are happy with how the first season looks and are already “very interested in making the second season as soon as possible.”
The first season will be made up of nine episode and will be released on HBO this year. An exact release date has not yet been confirmed.
