If there were ever a show that could give Game Of Thrones a run for its money, it is this one
Halo is one of those epic cultural landmarks that is almost impossible to properly define.
It launched back in 2001, and promptly changed how we play video games, reinventing multi-player shooters forever.
Halo 5 was released in 2015, and to date the series has sold over 65 million copies, or over $3.4 billion in sales.
That is a huge fanbase to take advantage of, and Hollywood has had a tough time cracking the nut so far.
Peter Jackson (The Lord Of The Rings) attempted to produce a big screen adaptation, with Neil Blomkamp (District 9) to direct, but it kind of fell apart when the budget began to spiral out of control.
So it was back-to-the-chalk-boarded, and reimagined as a TV series, and now Showtime (the folks behind Billions, Homeland and The Affair) have agreed to foot the bill.
According to The Hollywood Reporter:
“The premium cable network announced on Thursday that it has picked up 10 episodes of the live-action scripted drama series, with Kyle Killen (Awake) set to serve as exec producer, writer and showrunner. Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) will direct multiple episodes of the series and serve as an exec producer.”
If you’ve never seen Wyatt’s take on the Apes movies, then we fully suggest you check them out, but even a man as talented as him will have a tough time distilling down the future-techno-religious jargon than the Halo series descended into. Here’s hoping he focuses on the battles and the sci-fi-politics, and less on the existential crisis that the franchise is still having trouble escaping from.
