The most famous true crime case in recent memory is coming to your screen.
Sky and HBO will be making a new documentary series that focuses on Adnan Syed.
As fans of the incredible podcast Serial will know, following the 1999 disappearance and murder of an 18-year-old Baltimore County high school student named Hae Min Lee, her ex-boyfriend, Adnan Syed, was convinced of the crime.
In June 2016, Baltimore Circuit Court Judge Martin P. Welch vacated Adnan Syed’s conviction and granted him a new trial after new evidence challenged the reliability of the cell phone data that linked Syed to the crime scene, and a long-awaited alibi witness finally had her day in court.
The State of Maryland appealed the lower court judge’s ruling, but on March 29, 2018, the Court of Special Appeals also ruled to vacate Syed’s conviction and grant him the retrial he has been waiting for.
The Case Against Adnan Syed will be a four-hour documentary series that’s directed by Academy Award nominee Amy Berg (Deliver Us from Evil, West of Memphis).
The documentary will debut in Europe on Sky Atlantic and it will closely re-examine the events that lead up to Hae Min Lee’s disappearance.
Throughout the course of the series, the documentary will switch its attention from high school romance to forbidden love and cultural conflict, to the aftermath of her disappearance.
We’re also going to get an in-depth look at the original police investigation and the present day situation as Adnan Syed awaits a new trial.
Presenting new discoveries as well as ground-breaking revelations that challenge the state’s case, the series will also offer exclusive access to those closest to it.
Viewers will hear accounts from Adnan Syed, the defence team, the Syed family, friends and teachers of Hae Min Lee, and members of Baltimore City law enforcement.
This could be something special.
