Gone too soon

Heartbroken gamers have said their farewells to Migos rapper Takeoff by holding their own, digital funeral on Grand Theft Auto.

The world of rap and music has been left in mourning following the Migos star’s death in Houston, Texas after he was hit by a stray bullet.

The performer, real name Kirshnik Khari Ball, best known as a member of hip hop trio Migos, along with his uncle Quavo and first cousin, Offset, was shot around 2.30am at a bowling alley called 810 Billiards & Bowling Houston.

According to VLADTV,  the emotional experience for GTA players saw many gathered to give the singer a proper (virtual) send off.

“Tonight we laid Takeoff to rest. All fans welcome [at all] three locations. All white at the church, all black at the house party. Wear your best fit at the house party,” the GTA alert on social media said. .

Players were advised there would be no killing at the event and players must have a microphone to interact with others to participate as they paid their respects to the star, whose real name Kirshnik Khari Ball.

Takeoff’s in real-life funeral, organised by his loved ones, will take place on November 11 at State Farm Arena in Atlanta. The venue can host more than 20,000 people, given that it is home to the NBA’s Atlanta Hawks.

It will be presided over by Reverend Jesse Curney III of New Mercies Christian Church and will start at 1pm local time on Friday, according to Atlanta radio station V-103.

In a statement to TMZ, Curney said: “I was really sad to hear the news. Kirshnik has been a faithful member since he was ten years old.

“He and his family were active and avid supporters of the church and the community as a whole.”

As news of the musician’s death spread across social media, the rap world once again lamented the senseless shooting that has claimed so many young stars’ lives.

Among them was Desiigner who could be seen crying and saying he’s “done” after hearing the news of his friend’s death.

As he cries in a video he shared on Instagram, the rapper can be heard shouting “Why, why, why do we do this? Why do we do this?”

Desiigner’s sentiments were shared by many others, like journalist Jemele Hill, who tweeted: “I was in college when Biggie and ‘Pac were killed and thought there was no way we’d ever experience anything remotely close to that again.

“Now it’s happening so frequently that you barely have time to recover before someone else killed. RIP Takeoff.”
