Superman star Henry Cavill is set to play the role of a 'multiverse Wolverine variant' in the upcoming Deadpool 3 movie.
This will be Cavill's first appearance in the Marvel universe.
Entertainment site Giant Freakin Robot revealed the details of Cavill's character, and while they're very hit and miss as a source, last year they successfully broke the news that Scooby-Doo star Linda Cardellini would voice Lylla the otter in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3.
The Cardellini announcement was soon after confirmed by director James Gunn, so there's an argument to be made that this Cavill rumour could turn out to have the same fate.
Fans of the franchise had been hoping Cavill would earn an inclusion at some point, and many speculated that he could be cast as fan-favourite Captain Britain.
Considering the transient nature of multiverse characters in the Marvel universe, there remains a chance that Cavill could reappear in the franchise as someone else later down the line.
Despite the mixed reviews of the Superman films, Cavill’s portrayal of the Man of Steel was generally well-received and there will be a large contingency who will want to see him maintain a presence in the universe in whatever capacity.
Once Cavill's role in the new Deadpool gets confirmed, speculation will turn to his character's appearance. Will he wear a long dark coat? Will he have a beard? So many unanswered questions.
We were treated to the first teaser of the upcoming third instalment during last month's SuperBowl commercial break. The ad also revealed the official title of the flick will be Deadpool & Wolverine.
Filming reportedly wrapped in January, with the official UK cinema release set to be July 25th.
It's no surprise that Ryan Reynolds will once again reprise his role as Wade Wilson, aka Deadpool, but the big addition will be Hugh Jackman returning as Wolverine.
Speaking to Digital Spy back in 2022, Jackman said: "All because of this device they have in the Marvel world of moving around timelines now, we can go back because it's 'science'. And so I don't have to screw with the Logan timeline, which was important to me, and I think probably to the fans, too."
