Eric Cantona will be in Manchester this summer to film a new film about synchronised swimming.

Mermaid Man will be the story of an unemployed man in Margaret Thatcher’s Britain who tries to set up a synchronised swimming team.

Cantona will be filming in his second home city this July, with Mermaid Man said to be similar to The Full Monty in its against-all-odds tone.

The Frenchman is a legend at Manchester United, having led the side to the title for the first time in 25 years in his first season in 1993.

He has made 14 films to date, the most famous and best of which saw him play a fictionalised version of himself in Ken Loach’s superb Looking For Eric.
