Ed Sheeran appears to have deleted his Twitter account

Is he gone for good?

Could it have had something to do with his cameo in Game of Thrones?

On the same day his well-flagged cameo on Game of Thrones didn’t exactly meet with universal approval, Ed Sheeran appears to have deleted his Twitter account.

At the time of writing, approximately 9am on Tuesday morning, a search for his username, @edsheeran, on the social media site produces the following result and it appears to have been that way since some time on Monday evening.

Sheeran’s cameo as a singing soldier in the first episode of season 7 of Game of Thrones has been a huge talking point since it aired in the early hours of Monday morning (and again on Sky Atlantic on Monday evening).

Sat with a group of Lannister soldiers who encounter Arya Stark in the woods, Sheeran is heard singing a song that was originally sung by Tyrion to Shae in the novels.

The cameo was incredibly brief, but it didn’t stop a lot of people from expressing their disapproval on Twitter after watching it.

Attributing the disappearance of Sheeran’s Twitter account to the reaction to his Game of Thrones cameo might be stretching things a little bit, however.

He took a break from the social media platform when taking a year off recently and only last month, he had to dismiss rumours that he was going to go off Twitter completely, which had been suggested in quotes attributed to Sheeran that had appeared in The Sun.

Besides, the singer’s official Facebook page included a mention of his Game of Thrones cameo on Monday…

… while a post on his Instagram page showed him climbing a mountain in Peru, where comments on Twitter were probably the least of his concern…

Whether Sheeran’s absence from Twitter will be temporary or not is another matter; accounts are permanently deleted 30 days after being deactivated so we’ll just have to wait and see.
