Starring two Irish actors, the show is earning Game of Thrones comparisons.
Dune: Prophecy – the series prequel to the hit movies Dune and Dune: Part Two – is climbing up the streaming charts.
Now available to watch via NOW and Sky, the show is set 10,000 years before the events of the Denis Villeneuve-directed films.
The official logline for the series reads: “Dune: Prophecy follows two Harkonnen sisters (played by Emily Watson and Olivia Williams) as they combat forces that threaten the future of humankind, and establish the fabled sect that will become known as the Bene Gesserit.”
Inspired by the novel Sisterhood of Dune, written by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson, the show also stars Vikings’ Travis Fimmel as an enigmatic soldier who jeopardises the two sisters’ plan.
On top of this, its cast includes Irish actresses Aoife Hinds (Normal People) and Faoileann Cunningham (The Northman), as well as Jessica Barden (The End of the F***ing World), Jodhi May (The Last of the Mohicans) and Mark Strong (Temple).
JOE has seen the two episodes of the series released to date and can confirm that its excellent performances (particularly Fimmel and Watson), its lavish production values, its plot filled with palace intrigue and its subtle nods to the Villeneuve movies make it a must watch for Dune fans and/or fantasy genre fans alike.
If you don’t believe us, here is a sample of some other positive reviews for Dune: Prophecy:
The Daily Beast: “Emily Watson’s imposing performance as a vengeful and cunning schemer makes it an engrossing stand-alone saga of loyalty, treachery, ambition, and avarice.”
Daily Telegraph (UK): “It feels like a minor miracle that Dune: Prophecy has made it to the screen… An even bigger surprise is that it’s great fun — with the caveat that its spiritual predecessor is less Dune than Game of Thrones.”
Salon.com: “What matters most is the look and feel of it. The set design and especially the costumes are stunning.”
TV Guide: “Dune: Prophecy establishes itself as an exciting, spectacle-heavy series driven by dramatic developments and intriguing secrets.”
Variety: “At its best, the show does justice to the intricate politics and ethical debates that form a cornerstone of Frank Herbert’s fictional universe.”
And not only is Dune: Prophecy earning solid reviews, it placed second in JustWatch’s weekly Top 10 TV show streaming chart for the UK.
It placed between The Day of the Jackal in the first spot and Say Nothing in third place.
The first two episodes of Dune Prophecy are available to watch via NOW Entertainment and Sky Atlantic.
The rest of its six episode season will drop weekly on Mondays.
