The Wire is still the best thing ever - when David Simon announces a new project, it's time to get excited.
After treating us all to his epic crime opus from the streets of Baltimore, Simon went on to make The Deuce, Generation Kill and Treme but in his new show, A Dry Run, he's stepping back in time.

Variety, the drama series will follow members of the Abraham Lincoln Battalion who came to Spain from the U.S. to fight fascism during the Spanish Civil War.
What's even better news is the fact that two of The Wire's writers, George Pelecanos and Dennis Lehane, will also be working on this new show. At present, A Dry Run is being conceived as a six-hour miniseries and speaking at its launch, Simon said that it's going to offer “compelling and tragic narrative."
He added that “the Spanish struggle against fascism and the misuse of capitalism as a bulwark to totalitarianism represent the preeminent political narrative of the 20th century and of our time still/
For Simon, “when the Spanish Republic was threatened, capitalism chose tyranny. So the better men who could not abide that choice came to Spain [to fight]. Today, that same choice confronts us again. But more than that, the events of 1936 to 1939 made clear that capitalism – while it may be an elemental tool for generating mass wealth – offers no moral answer to how people can live or how societies thrive.”
The show will be shot mainly in English, the language of the main characters, and it's going to be set in the period from 1936 to 1939.
As for Season 2 of The Deuce, production has already started with James Franco on board.
