Courteeners' Liam Fray swapped his denim and leather for a graduation gown and cap to pick up an honorary degree.

Shocked but grateful, the frontman was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Arts by the University Of Salford, where he once studied Economics and Creative Writing before quitting to pursue music.

On stage, Fray said: “It's so very humbling, and somewhat surreal, to be thought of and awarded a Doctorate of Arts by Salford University. "When I left my Creative Writing course to dedicate more time to writing music, I never imagined I'd be coming back for something like this so soon. liamfray liamfray2  "I feel like I'm accepting on behalf of all our fans, so massive love to all of them. And of course, kudos to Salford University for recognising such talent.”

In June, the Courteeners played to 25,000 fans in Manchester’s Heaton Park, before going on to play Glastonbury and V Festival in August.
