Julie Goodyear starred in the British soap for 25 years
Coronation Street actress Julie Goodyear has sadly been diagnosed with dementia.
The 81-year-old’s husband, Scott Brand, confirmed the harrowing news in a statement this afternoon.
He explained that she was suffering from forgetfulness but doctors then diagnosed her with dementia.
Scott shared: “My darling wife and I have had to come to terms with this heartbreaking diagnosis. Unfortunately, Julie has been suffering from forgetfulness for some time.
“We have been seeking medical advice and assistance, but we now know that there is no hope of a reversal in the situation – and that her condition will get progressively, and perhaps speedily, worse,” he continued.
“We have taken the decision to publicly announce the diagnosis as Julie still loves visiting friends and eating out.”
“She is recognised, and fans love to meet her – and she them – but she can get confused particularly if she is tired.
“I hope people will understand,” he added.
Julie became a legend of the soap opera world after playing Bet Lynch on Coronation Street for 25 years.
She returned multiple times in 2002 and 2003.
Fans have been sending loving messages following the heartbreaking announcement.
One wrote, “Very sad. Wishing her all the best. Bet Lynch was a Corrie legend.”
“Very sad to hear Julie Goodyear has dementia. Grandad suffered with it for years until he passed. Am I selfish for hoping she could make one final Corrie appearance if she is well enough?” another said.
