Colwyn Bay FC win Christmas with brilliant Fairytale of New York tweet

Well played Colwyn Bay, well played.

The Seagulls from North Wales, currently plying their trade in the Northern Premier League Premier Division, have kicked off Christmas with possibly the best official festive football tweet around.

It is the time of year when Fairytale of New York is near impossible to ignore. Despite being omnipresent, the classic performed by the Pogues and Kirsty MacColl never gets old.

Except for many football fans, a particular line from the melancholy tune is impossible not to amend to include the Welsh club’s name.

The chorus of…

The boys of the NYPD choir
Were singing ‘Galway Bay’
And the bells are ringing
Out for Christmas day

…is oft changed to suggest that New York’s boys in blue are singing ‘Colwyn Bay’. Just to clarify, the club stressed that they aren’t indeed namechecked by Shane and Kirsty…
