Cillian Murphy has said he would “love” to revisit zombie horror, 28 Days Later.

The actor, currently being praised for his starring role in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, said he’d be if for appearing in a sequel of there’s “more story to tell.”

Murphy, who was just 26 when the movie came out, sees the actor star as Jim, a bicycle courier who wakes from a coma to discover that a highly contagious, aggression-inducing virus has romped its way through civilisation.

On the run from the infected, Jim comes across a group of survivors who he hopes may be key to his ongoing survival.

Directed by Danny Boyle and written by Alex Garland, 28 Days Later also starred Naomie Harris, Christopher Eccleston, Megan Burns and Brendan Gleeson.

The movie, released in 2002, was a critical and financial success, making $82.7 million worldwide on a budget of just $8 million. On review site, Rotten Tomatoes the film has a 87 per cent rating.

While the film spawned a sequel in 2007 – called 28 Weeks Later – Murphy did not return as Jim.

However, he’s now said he would be happed to, under the right circumstances.

Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Murphy was asked about the chances of him making a sequel and said: “I’d love to do it. There needs to be a script, and Danny needs to find the time, and Alex needs to feel that there’s more story to tell.”

And it seems that might be in the works. In an interview with Inverse in June, Boyle and Garland let slip that a sequel was being talked about “quite seriously.”

Garland said: “A few years ago an idea materialized in my head for what would be really 28 Years Later. Danny always liked the idea.”

Boyle added: “So we’re talking about it quite seriously, quite diligently. If he doesn’t want to direct it himself I’ll be well up for it, if we can execute a similarly good idea.”

When Murphy was told about the discussions, by a reporter from the Independent, he replied: “That’s great to hear. I didn’t know that – I would be there in a flash. I made two movies with both of those guys, and I would love to work with them again. Of course, I’m there.”
