Bran Stark on why his scenes with a certain someone felt a bit strange

Paul Moore

Every Game of Thrones fan has been thinking about this.

In terms of Game of Thrones history, we’re used to things being a little bit frosty, cold and icy between our beloved characters and that’s without even mentioning The Wall and the Night King’s army!

Simply put, tension and bitterness is what defines the majority of relationships in the show.

Moments of pure joy and happiness are rare to find, and even when they do occur, they’re usually pretty gruesome -case in point, the sadistic pleasure that we all got from seeing Joffrey and Ramsay die in a slow and painful manner.

This being said, you would have to be colder than a White Walker to not feel some happiness during those uplifting moments that are scattered throughout the show’s history.

For example, you probably got goosebumps during the recent meeting between Jon and Daenerys, or Sansa’s reunion with her older brother at Winterfell.

A family reunion is a cause for celebration in Westeros – particularly if you’re a member of House Stark because good news is rare to find for that family – but plenty of people were wondering why Bran was so distant when he was recently reunited with Sansa at Winterfell.

It’s clear that Bran has no intentions of being the Lord of Winterfell because in his own words “I can never be lord of anything. I’m the Three-Eyed Raven.”

Naturally, Sansa didn’t have a clue what the hell he was talking about and as for the mention of her wedding night with Ramsay, that was enough to cause Sansa to leave.

Speaking with EW,  Isaac Hempstead Wright provided a few more details about his character’s motivation during that scene.

“I think it’s a major shock for Sansa. She’s lost her brother once before when he fell out of that tower, and now Bran’s back but she loses him all over again. All the Starks have changed so much. Arya is like this ninja assassin. Sansa has been held captive by these tyrannical men and had to become politically cunning herself. But Bran is now this tree-raven-magic thing,” he said.

He adds “It’s like imagining you have all of space and time in your head. Bran is existing in thousands of planes of existence at any one time. So it’s quite difficult for Bran to have any kind of semblance of personality anymore because he’s really like a giant computer.”

Regarding his position as the Three-Eyed Raven, Hempstead Wright says that his character has more to learn in order to combat the Night King.

“Bran really at this stage is not the Three-Eyed Raven. He’s got the title but hasn’t had thousands of years of sitting in a cave looking through time. Somebody put in front of him a massive encyclopedia of all of time and he’s only opened page one. He can look stuff up but doesn’t have this all-knowing all-seeing capability just yet.”
