An unconventional Western gem is among the movies on TV tonight

Simon Kelly

It’s got 93% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Even in 2024, Marvel continue to churn out high-budget behemoths, albeit at a slower pace than before, and we’re all just getting a bit tired of the superhero genre.

However, in 2017, at the height of the superhero flick craze, the franchise released one of their biggest changes in direction with the highly-rated Logan.

The film, which brought back Hugh Jackman in the iconic role of Wolverine, was everything a Marvel movie wasn’t at the time. No polish, no gigantic action set-pieces and very little CGI effects. It was, in everything but name, a Western.

The grounded, dark and brooding film was a perfect send off for one of the best characters in comic-book history, focusing on an older, more grizzled version of Wolverine who is leaving a quiet life in the shadows.

However, when a young mutant girl (played by the brilliant Daphne Keen), comes to him for him, Logan must bring her to safety.

Logan contains huge amounts of emotion and realism and disregards the messiness of modern superhero tropes to bring one of the most memorable Marvel films of the last decade.

Jackman himself brings a career-defining performance as the character that’s shaped his career and we connect deeply with the aging and bitter mutant.

If you’re not a superhero fan and missed Logan the first time around, now is your chance to finally catch a fantastic Marvel flick and an even better Western – airing on Film Four at 11.20pm.

As well as being one of the great movies on TV tonight, Logan is also available to watch on Disney +.

Here are some of the other movies on TV this evening.

I Robot – Film Four – 6.50pm

Will Smith stars in this noughties sci-fi action film about artificial intelligence coming to life and turning on the human race. Spooooky.

Olympus Has Fallen – Film Four – 9pm

Gerard Butler stars in the first in a trilogy of things falling, as a secret agent who tries to save the president after the White House gets attacked by terrorists.

The Blues Brothers – ITV4 – 9pm

Another choice of the movies on TV tonight is this 1980 American musical action comedy starring John Belushi as “Joliet” Jake Blues and Dan Aykroyd as Elwood, based on their Saturday Night Live sketches.
