This week marks 36 years since Airplane! was released in cinemas in Ireland, providing us with a convenient excuse to pontificate about what is arguably the funniest movie of all time. There’s a danger with comedy movies that they can feel dated quite quickly, but despite being nearly 40 years old, Airplane! has aged very well and it’s no surprise that it has proved extremely popular with generations born years after its release. The deadpan and ridiculously silly style of comedy in Airplane! has never been bettered and hasn’t been seen – at least to a level of similar quality – since the Naked Gun trilogy and no matter how many times you watch it, such was the sheer volume of jokes that you’re bound to find a new one on every viewing. If you somehow haven’t yet watched it, do yourself a favour and do so as soon as possible.
