Ricky Gervais' imperishable The Office is a masterclass in subversive comedy.

Unlike most comedies, where witty characters get themselves in all kinds of amusing muddles and spend their spare time sitting around trying out-banter each other, the BBC Two mockumentary featured a cast of charmless, gormless characters whose sheer bleak desperation made us laugh either in sympathy or from Schadenfreude.
