The Apprentice’s Luisa Zissman defends ‘traditional men’ who hold doors open for women

She discussed the politics of holding a door open on Boys Don’t Cry With Russell Kane

TV personality and retail entrepreneur Luisa Zissman has said that she thinks men should still hold open doors for women and doesn’t like the confusion over “traditional” behaviour today.

Speaking on the first episode of the new season of JOE’s podcast Boys Don’t Cry With Russell Kane, the former The Apprentice and Big Brother contestant said she likes “chivalrous men”.

“Personally, when I say I like men to be men, I like elements of tradition,” she explained on the show. “I like chivalrous men. I like people opening the car door for me. If I’m out for dinner, if I stand up to go to the toilet, I expect the guy to stand up.”

To which fellow guest Luke Kempner replied: “Do you live in Downton Abbey?”

Luisa Zissman went on to elaborate on how differences in modern attitudes lead to an awkward date moment for a friend of hers.

“I have a friend that went on a date recently,” she said. “And as she sat down, the guy pulled out the chair, and she went to sit in the chair – and he sat in the chair. Because she was expecting [him to pull out a chair for her].

“I feel men are like ‘What the fuck do you want us to be then anymore? We don’t know. Are we meant to protect or provide, or are we meant to sit back and let you be the breadwinner, and we’ll stay at home? Do you want us to offer to pay half the bill? Or are we meant to open the door for you? What are we doing anymore?’.

“And women are like ‘we don’t know’.”
