Rhod Gilbert has announced he is receiving treatment for cancer.

The 53-year-old did not reveal the type of cancer he had, only that he was receiving care at the Velindre Cancer Centre in Cardiff, a facility of which he is a patron.

In a post on Facebook, the comedian wrote: “As a proud patron of Velindre Cancer Centre, I’ve trekked the world, hosted chaotic quizzes and star-studded comedy nights.

“I’ve met and made friends with so many inspirational staff, patients and their families. It has been a huge part of my life for the last ten years.

He continued: “So while I never imagined that I would be a patient here, I know better than anyone that I am in the best possible hands.

“The NHS care I’m receiving is incredible. I wouldn’t wish this on anyone…but who knows, maybe I’ll come out the other end with a new stand-up show and a 40 minute rant about orange squash.”

He added that he would be “disappearing for a while and won’t be commenting further” whilst he focuses on his recovery.

Last week, the Never Mind The Buzzcocks announced that he was postponing scheduled dates for his Book of John shows in Swansea, Hereford, Yeovil, and Truro.

He added that he was working on rescheduling the shows for early next year, the BBC reports.

The comedian is a comedy panel show regular having appeared on the likes of Mock The Week, 8 Out of 10 Cats, Have I Got News For You, and starred on series 7 of Taskmaster.

Gilbert also has his own BBC show called Rhod Gilbert’s Work Experience in which he tried his hand at a number of different jobs.
