Aiden McGeady cuts Arsenal to ribbons en route to game’s opener

Oh my days

Ben Kiely

Aiden McGeady was pegged as the future star of the Republic of Ireland team.

Although he’s enjoyed a lot of success as a professional footballer, especially at club level in Scotland and Russia, the last few years of his career haven’t panned out as fans would have liked it to.

He couldn’t nail down a starting place at Everton in the Premier League, he struggled with Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship and at the age of 30, when most players would be in their prime, he has found himself back in the second tier of England with Preston North End.

However, every day is a new opportunity to prove your doubters wrong and McGeady seemed hell bent on seizing his side’s FA Cup third round clash against Arsenal to do exactly that. It didn’t take him long to do it either.

Just seven minutes into the game, McGeady shone.

He took possession of the ball in midfield, put those dizzying feet to use to leave Aaron Ramsey for dead, then played a defence-splitting pass into the Arsenal box where it was dinked to Callum Robinson who applied the requisite finish.

The moment of magic won’t come as any surprise to fans of the football video game series Fifa. In the 2017 installment of the franchise, McGeady was ranked alongside Pele and Cristiano Ronaldo as one of the most skillful players in the entire game.
