‘What a weird article’

Aston Villa defender Tyrone Mings has hit back at Graeme Souness’ recent comments in the Daily Mail after he accused Mings of ‘talking a lot for someone who hadn’t achieved anything.’

Souness gave a brutal assessment of the defender after he was stripped of the captaincy in favour at Villa Park while also losing his place in the Villa starting XI.

The pundit, who also writes a column for the Mail agreed with Steven Gerrard’s decision and had some strong words to say about the England international.

“I won’t be joining the love-in for Tyrone Mings, the man Steven Gerrard has stripped of the Aston Villa captaincy in a move which, summed up in one sentence, says: ‘I just don’t fancy you,'” he said.

“Mings is ‘well-loved in the dressing room’, apparently. Well, when he appeared a couple of times on Zoom for shows we were doing on Sky Sports during lockdown, I thought: ‘For a young man who’s not achieved anything in the game you’ve a hell of a lot to say.’

But the centre-back has come out fighting and slammed Souness for his comments, claiming that he “said nothing to me at the time” when referring to the Zoom call.

“What a weird article. That zoom call I was invited on was 2 years ago and he said nothing to me at the time, now wants to drag me into his pointless column,” he tweeted on Saturday.

“Btw, I’ve achieved plenty from where I started. Happy to chat things through if you ever need me.”

Mings featured in Villa’s 2-1 win against Everton and made a vital block towards the end of the game as they held on to win their first game of the season.
