Troy Deeney says Cristiano Ronaldo should join Wolves

Ronaldo transfer rumours are going nowhere any time soon

It might only have been a couple of days since the first reports claiming Cristiano Ronaldo could be leaving Juventus in the near future started doing the rounds, but already, we’re exhausted.

Ronaldo has, of course, promptly been linked with a return to Manchester United (barely a month goes by where someone, somewhere links Ronaldo with a return to Manchester United) but maybe – just maybe – his old club won’t be his only potential English suitors should he decide he fancies another crack at the Premier League.

The thought of a move to Manchester City or Liverpool might be a bit of a stretch given their fierce rivalries with United, but – according to Troy Deeney, at least – perhaps Wolves might be the idea next step for the multi-Ballon d’Or winner…

Speaking on talkSPORT, the Watford striker suggests a move to Molineux might be ideal for Ronaldo because… well, Portugal.

Ronaldo’s agent, Jorge Mendes, has strong connections with the club, who, as well as having a Portuguese manager, also have several Portugal internationals on their books.

“I think I was more looking at a club like Wolves with the Portugal connection,” Deeney said. “That would probably work.

“Whoever is getting him is getting an unbelievable talent. This season I think six in four he has already got in Serie A. You are not going to get the same Ronaldo you had at Manchester United. I think that’s always going to be the comparison.

“You look at Gareth Bale, for example, he has gone back to Tottenham. You are comparing him already to the one that left to go to Madrid.

“You are still going to get goals from Ronaldo and you are still going to get goals from Bale – that’s going to be the forefront of everyone’s mind is he to that level?

“If he is available, I would be very surprised if there wasn’t a top ten club trying to sign him in the Premier League.

“I like Wolves. It is the odd one out [compared to Ronaldo’s previous clubs]… I think Wolves are creating something there with the players that they have where they will push for the top six in the next few years.

“Then, of course, as I said, the Portugal connection and there are so many positives. If you want to go to the next level then that’s the player you need to go for.”
