Sweden striker kept promise to 8-year-old with kickabout after Champions League final

Isn't that just Swede...

When we were young, we always dreamed that our favourite footballers would join us for a kickabout – but that dream came true for one eight-year-old in Stockholm.

The youngster lives in the same suburb where Sweden international striker John Guidetti – who has led the country’s under-21 side to the knock-out stages of the European Championship – grew up.

When he saw the former Celtic frontman in the street on the day of the Champions League final, the boy called out to see if the 23-year-old wanted to join him for a kickabout.

According to Cafe.se, Guidetti told the boy he had to rush home for the final, but would take him up on his offer if he was still playing afterwards.

Most of us might have taken that as a polite refusal, but not this young fan. Even though the game was not due to finish until 11.30pm local time, he stayed awake in the knowledge that Guidetti had “promised” him a game.

And sure enough, when the youngster went back outside with his dad a few minutes before midnight, the former under-21 star was there waiting.

With Guidetti’s actions coming around the same time as James Rodriguez’s grand gesture for a Colombia supporter, perhaps footballers don’t get the credit they’re due for the treatment of wide-eyed young fans.
