Son was a key name missed out, but there’s an explanation as to why
There’s no doubting that Heung-Min Son was one of the players of the season and that should be recognised. After all, he did finish as the Premier League’s joint top-scorer.
Just a few weeks on from the outrage of being overlooked for a PFA Player of the Year nomination, there is now even more rage as the South Korean was omitted from the Professional Footballer’s Association (PFA) Team of the Season.
The likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah – who he shared the golden boot with – all feature ahead despite Son’s glowing contribution to Tottenham Hotspur finishing in the top four.
But, before everyone continues to lose their minds about the pretty harsh exclusion, there is a likely reason as to why the 29-year-old was excluded.
Votes for the PFA awards are open in March, the period where Son displayed his best form of the season, including a hat trick in a 4-0 win against Aston Villa.
With that players voting in the awards will have likely considered players who may have been in a richer vein of form at the time (or just voted for their teammates instead).
Son made 35 appearances in the Premier League this season as he fired his way to the top of the scoring charts, registering 23 goals and nine assists for Antonio Conte’e side.
