Harry Burgoyne has condemned the vile chants
Shrewsbury Town goalkeeper Harry Burgoyne has called out the Shrewsbury fans who sang a chant mocking the victims of the Hillsborough disaster before their game against Liverpool on Sunday.
The League One outfit took a shock lead against Jurgen Klopp’s side when Daniel Udoh opened the scoring in the 27th minute.
However, the Reds responded well and levelled quickly through 17-year-old Kaide Gordon just seven minutes later.
Liverpool made it 2-1 when Fabinho converted a penalty, before substitute Roberto Firmino added another with a cheeky back-heel in the 78th minute.
Fabinho grabbed another in added-time to ensure the Merseyside outfit cruised into the fourth round of the FA Cup.
While Shrewsbury gave a good account of themselves on the pitch, a small proportion of their fans let the club down off the pitch.
Prior to kick-off, a video was posted on Twitter which showed a small group of Salop fans walking the streets of Liverpool signing, “F*** the 96” – which relates to the 96 (97 after a coroner ruled that Andrew Devine was unlawfully killed and that he is therefore the 97th victim of the disaster) Liverpool fans who tragically lost their lives in the Hillsborough disaster.
A number of people – including Shrewsbury shot-stopper Burgoyne – condemned the vile chanting, insisting that those ‘fans’ weren’t welcome to support the club.
On Twitter, the goalkeeper wrote: “As for these Shrewsbury fans! Should be ashamed of yourselves. Liverpool showed nothing but respect today. Shocking absolutely shocking! Out them and ban them for life!”

A Shrewsbury fan account added: “Have a word. If this is your mate… tell them to f*** off to Telford”.

Liverpool host Arsenal in the first leg of their EFL Cup semi-final on Thursday after it was postponed earlier this week due to Covid-19 cases within the Reds camp.
After being knocked out of the FA Cup, Shrewsbury return to league action as they travel to Crewe Alexandra on Saturday.
