Ruby Walsh has announced his retirement from horse racing aged 39. The legendary Irish jockey enjoyed an illustrious career spanning two decades.

Walsh has ridden some of the most successful horses of recent generations including Kauto Star, Hurricane Fly, Quevega and Faugheen.

Cheltenham was where Walsh enjoyed the most success, finishing as the top jockey at the event on 11 different occasions.

He retires with two Grand National victories under his belt while also having won the Irish equivalent at Burrows Saint.

A series of injuries have prevented him from riding as much as he would have hoped in recent years and with his 40th birthday coming up, his retirement should not come as  too much of a surprise.

The remaining races he was scheduled to ride at the Punchestown Gold Cup will now be forfeited after the announcement of his retirement.
