Rashford and Lukaku’s pre-match plan led to Buffon error against Manchester United

It turns out Buffon flapping at a tame shot in the six-yard box was destined to happen all along…

Marcus Rashford and Romelu Lukaku are starting to form a genuinely threatening partnership and the duo revealed after beating Paris Saint-Germain that they had formulated the perfect strategy to pull off the comeback.

Both of Lukaku’s goals came with the help of Rashford, who put Thilo Kehrer under pressure for the defender to play a slack backpass that found the Belgian for the first. A bouncing effort from the young forward created the second as Gianluigi Buffon fumbled the ball into Lukaku’s path.

Speaking after the game, Lukaku told BT Sport: “We were confident the day before the game, [playing] in the last game against Southampton as a pair up front.

“We knew that we could have done the business today and today we played together. It was a pleasure to play with him like that. And we both scored, so we’re happy.

“We have agreed that when he steps out on the press, I have to follow him and he did well pressing on Kehrer and then it was just a one-v-one. For the second one, I told him that every time he shoots I’ll follow the ball in and that happened as well, so it’s good.”

Wednesday’s game was the second in a row where Rashford has partnered Lukaku in a 4-4-2 formation, partly brought about by United’s injury troubles.

Against both PSG and Southampton, the ex-Everton man notched a brace with Rashford adding the late penalty that put the Red Devils into the Champions League quarter-finals right at the death.
