Nottingham Panthers have confirmed that one of their players has died following a “freak accident” in Sheffield.

Adam Johnson, 29, was playing for the Panthers in their game against Sheffield Steelers where thousands saw Johnson reportedly suffered a serious cut to the neck from a skate.

A statement released by the Panthers on Sunday said: “The Nottingham Panthers are truly devastated to announce that Adam Johnson has tragically passed away following a freak accident at the game in Sheffield last night. The Panthers would like to send our thoughts and condolences to Adam’s family, his partner, and all his friends at this extremely difficult time.

“Everyone at the club including players, staff, management, and ownership are heartbroken at the news of Adam’s passing. Our thoughts are also with the fans and staff of both clubs, especially those who attended or were following the game, who will be devastated following today’s news.”

The Elite Ice Hockey League added that they were “heartbroken” to confirm the news and confirmed that all games from Sunday’s schedule had been postponed as a result.

Johnson joined the Panthers in August ahead of the current 2023/24 season having started his career out in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins side in the US.

Adam spent three years with his first club, before eventually moving on to play in the Swedish Hockey League.
