New details emerge after Italian journalist brutally killed and set on fire

The 53-year-old's body was discovered in the southern Italian province of Salerno on Sunday (19 July)

Esposito's body was found badly burned near farmland after firefighters were called to a fire in the area. The blaze was later found to have originated at the scene where the 53-year-old's body was discovered.

Because of his work as a journalist, concerns have been raised that Esposito's death may have been connected to his reporting. The European and International Federations of Journalists, together with their Italian affiliates, have called for an investigation into whether his death was linked to his work.

New updates in the Luca Esposito case:

The biggest update to emerge in the past 24 hours have been the results of an initial autopsy, reported about online by Rai News.

Per Rai: "Initial observations of the body revealed a blow to the head, which, however, is not consistent with a gunshot wound. 

They also made clear: "Confirmation will only be obtained after further examination." [Translated from Italian].

Another Italian newspaper, Il Mattino, has reported similar findings, noting: "It has been ruled out that Esposito was killed by a gunshot, as no firearm wounds were found on the body."

Also translated from Italian, the Il Mattino article adds: "As time passes, a new modus operandi of the killers is gaining ground: they may have beaten the sports journalist with sticks, causing multiple fractures, and then, perhaps while he was still alive, doused him with flammable liquid and burned him.

"These circumstances still need to be confirmed by investigators, but they have abandoned the theory that death was caused by a gunshot."

This has thrown doubt into the assumption that Esposito was shot dead, with Rai also reporting the journalist died "after a brutal beating that left his bones broken."

Further details from the police investigation, as reported by Rai News, indicate that Esposito may have travelled to the scene by car, after a set of car keys were found in his pocket. He may have had an appointment with someone or arrived with another person before his death.

While Italian authorities have not confirmed any connection between Esposito’s death and organised crime, International Business Times (IBT) reported that attention has been drawn to the fact that the investigation is being overseen by Raffaele Cantone, described as an “anti-mafia chief prosecutor.”

However, although police are not ruling anything out at this stage "a link to his journalism is not currently the main line of inquiry," the IBT report details.

Otherwise, there has been some confusion over Esposito's work with an organisation called ARPAC, a Regional Agency for Environmental Protection.

Initially it was reported that Esposito had told friends and family he had completed work for ARPAC, but the institution have since released a statement denying he was ever an "employee or manager."

This much was confirmed by Italian journalist Barbara Pelle.

Writing on X, she said: "Investigators are focusing their attention on Luca (Luigi) Esposito's alleged employment at ARPAC.

"The agency released an official statement clarifying that he was neither an employee nor a manager of the agency."

This denial was also reported by Il Mattiano, who write: "Many questions remain for investigators to answer, including why Esposito told friends and acquaintances that he worked for Arpac and carried out inspections for the regional agency, while an official statement from Arpac denied any employment relationship with the victim, and yesterday the Order of Biologists of Campania and Molise reiterated that Esposito was not registered in the professional register."

What else do we know about Esposito?

Esposito was well known as a journalist in Italy for his collaborative work on the newspaper La Città di Salerno, as well as the TV station Otto Channel, and for personally running the football news website Tuttosalernitana.com.

The director for Otto Channel, an outlet for which Esposito worked as a collaborator has provided the following statement, as quoted by Rai News.

"Luca was a valuable collaborator for us as a commentator, certainly inconvenient but never banal and above all always courageous in defending his opinions on the world of football.

"In this difficult time, we express our deepest sympathies to the family who are experiencing such terrible grief and hope that law enforcement can shed full light on a tragedy that is causing great public concern, bringing those responsible to justice.

"At Otto Channel, we are deeply saddened also because Luca would have been one of the key commentators on our sports programs next season.

"With Annibale Discepolo, he would have formed a fun and brilliant duo on the program dedicated to Avellino football.

"Luca was extremely popular and always a talking point. A big hug to the family from the entire Otto Channel and Ottopagine team ."
