Messi’s bodyguard storms onto pitch to protect star from invading fan

Luke Davies

The Argentine was on the far side of the pitch when his bodyguard spotted a stray fan who made his way onto the field of play.

It was a matter of seconds before the guard caught up with the invader stopping play in the process. The incident occurred at the Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas where Messi’s Inter Miami faced Sporting Kansas City.

The bodyguard has attracted a lot of media attention since being employed by Messi. Wherever he goes so does Yassine Cheiko. But who is he? According to the Athletic Cheiko does not give much away on social media, nor does he give interviews. A mystery, but one could assume he has some kind of military background; many ex-seals are employed as bodyguards once they leave the forces.

The game provided as much excitement as the incident and Messi, as ever, was the entertainer. The legend provided a sumptuous assist for Diego Gomez who levelled things after Sporting KC took an early lead.

Messi was not satisfied with an assist, he got on the score sheet in style on 51 minutes with a thunderous left-footed strike that rolled back the years. His South American counterpart Luis Suarez got in the act on 71 minutes with a clinical finish to win the game for Miami in front of a packed arena of over 70,000 fans.

The victory will be welcomed by fans after two consecutive defeats in recent weeks.

After the game, Miami boss Tata Martino praised his side: “Being first in the standings is comforting, especially with a long week ahead,” he said. “It was very important for us to get out of that rut of getting ties, losses, making mistakes, and we were able to do that, to regain the feeling that we can win at the end of a long, tough week.”

Next up, Inter Miami host Nashville on April 21st and will be looking to retain the top spot in the MLS Eastern Conference.
