Manchester City’s Leroy Sané announcement is gloriously over-the-top

If Michael Bay did transfer announcements

When people mentioned the Premier League’s multi-million-pound TV deal, we assumed it was about broadcasting matches.

Turns out part of the money might have gone towards clubs’ impressively dramatic announcements, be they about new kits or, in Manchester City’s case, new signings.

Pep Guardiola’s squad has been bolstered with the arrival of Leroy Sané from Schalke, and big things are expected of the German youngster.

Instead of a quiet, unassuming unveiling for the 20-year-old, the club have gone with a clip which Michael Bay might be tempted to dismiss as “a bit much”.

The Hollywood music. The mix of intrusive close-ups and expansive wide shots. The bizarre decision to use what looks like a mannequin in a Man City shirt. We didn’t see them pulling this shit with Olexandr Zinchenko.

Hell, the Ukrainian didn’t even get his own hashtag. He’s definitely the nerdy sidekick to Sané’s big-shot. The Robin to his Batman. The Donnie Azoff to his Jordan Belfort. The Cameron Frye to his Ferris Bueller.

Sané is already settling in well, joining up with his compatriot Ilkay Gundogan, a man whose arrival at the Etihad Stadium was more teen comedy than Bay blockbuster.
