Joe Rogan pretty much confirms Conor McGregor will fight for the lightweight title in New York

UFC 205 card in New York needs a main event and who better to headline the historic card than the promotion's biggest superstar, Conor McGregor?

With New York native Jon Jones already confirming he's out of the running, Ronda Rousey keeping out of the spotlight and George St-Pierre eyeing up a return at UFC 206, the Notorious seems to be the perfect fit for that headline slot. However, he needs a big-name opponent in order to capture the fans' attention and having already emphatically beaten Jose Aldo and Max Holloway, the two top contenders at featherweight, it's expected that McGregor will risk losing his belt in order to move up to 155 lbs next. One match-up that has been heavily rumoured since McGregor successfully sought retribution against Nate Diaz at UFC 202 is a lightweight title fight against champion Eddie Alvarez. The Pride of Philadelphia was a huge name in the sport before relinquishing his Bellator title and signing for the UFC in 2014. After dropping his hard-fought promotional debut to Donald Cerrone, Alvarez earned his title shot the hard way by beating former Strikeforce champion Gilbert Melendez and former UFC champion Anthony Pettis. When he finally got his opportunity to claim the belt against Rafael dos Anjos, he seized it with both hands, knocking the Brazilian out in the first round. Alvarez needs an opponent for his first defence in order to try to build up his legacy even more and McGregor is expected to get the nod. Speaking on the recent Fight Companion podcast for UFC Hidalgo, former UFC heavyweight Brendan Schaub teed up host Joe Rogan nicely to drop the news that everyone wanted to hear.

"Rumour is Eddie Alvarez and him (McGregor) tangoing."

Rogan was so excited, he literally sang his response. Although he didn't actually confirm the fight, he all but confirmed it.

"I know a little something that I wish I could tell... It's a interesting fight, man. If it happens... allegedly at Madison Square Garden. If it happens... allegedly in a couple of months." "But if it does happen, Eddie's a big boy. He can grapple. He's a fucking grinder and whatever endurance issues Conor may have, he better iron those fuckers out before you go to town with that guy."
