This may affect possible moves for the likes of Mohamed Salah
Any future big-money moves in Saudi Arabia may come to a halt, with the Saudi Pro League reassessing their transfer policy ahead of the summer window.
Last year saw the Gulf Kingdom take the transfer market by storm, bringing in big names such as Karim Benzema, N’Golo Kante, Roberto Firmino and more.
In total, Saudi clubs spent £695m on incomings while only generating around £12.7m in player sales.
And according to Bloomberg, Saudi clubs will reign in on the spending this summer in order to “reduce losses and build a more sustainable domestic transfer market”.
The league’s COO Carlo Nohra told them: “he deals were not signed for just one season, so it is imperative to the clubs to try to act, they will have to offload players to free up some budget to be able to buy new ones.
“Making consumer experience a better experience is part of the transformation strategy, but nothing is going to change overnight, especially with the kind of facilities we have at the moment.”
What does this mean for future transfers?
One player who has continuously been linked with a move to the Middle East is Mohamed Salah.
On transfer deadline day at the start of the season the 31-year-old was the subject of a £200m bid from Al Ittihad but it was rejected with Liverpool keen to keep him and aware of the lack of time to find a replacement.
Heading into the summer Salah will have 12 months left on his contract which will leave the Reds with a decision on whether to cash in or try and convince him to stay at Anfield.
Liverpool will already lose one big name when Jurgen Klopp departs at the end of this season after nine years at the club and Salah could also follow out the door if they feel the time is right.
