Asked after the match at Accor Stadium whether Richarlison – now in the final year of his contract – could depart during the summer transfer window, De Zerbi did not offer any guarantees, as the BBC reported from Australia.

"I don’t know because I like him as a player and as a guy. He’s unbelievable in terms of attitude and behaviour. But, in the end, we have to respect what he wants to do. Sometimes he says he wants to stay, sometimes he wants to leave."

The winner in Sydney will do little to settle the speculation. With 12 months left on his deal, Richarlison’s situation looks set to become one of the defining questions of Tottenham’s summer. The forward joined Spurs from Everton in 2022 and has since become a fixture in north London, but a summer exit would hand De Zerbi a sizeable rebuild in attack. For now, the manager insists the decision rests with the player himself.
