England netball's hopes of a Commonwealth Games gold medal ended on Saturday with a 61-54 semi-final defeat by a powerful New Zealand side, as BBC Sport reported. The Roses still have a chance of bronze, but fell short of emulating their historic 2018 triumph.
New Zealand passed the ball with speed and accuracy early on, and the height advantage of shooter Grace Nweke proved decisive. The Silver Ferns hit double figures inside eight minutes and led 16-11 at the end of the first quarter before extending their advantage to 29-24 by half-time.
England, who had settled their nerves when goal shooter Liv Tchine drew the match level at 3-3, rallied in the second period. The introduction of Eleanor Cardwell lifted the intensity and cut the deficit to 25-21, but Nweke was near-flawless, scoring 23 goals from 23 shots before her only miss arrived just before the interval.
New Zealand will face either Australia or Jamaica in Sunday's gold-medal match. For the Roses, the tournament that had promised so much against the backdrop of England's wider sporting summer now comes down to a bronze-medal decider, as they aim to leave Glasgow on the podium.
