Scotland went on to lose 2-0

Scotland fans and football fans around the globe were left baffled by the decision to rule out Scott McTominay’s free kick against Spain.

A win for Steve Clarke’s side would’ve officially confirmed their place at Euro 2024 but they were unable to get the job done as second half goals from Alvaro Morata and Oihan Sancet mean they have a little longer to wait before booking flights to Germany.

The Tartan army thought they had taken the lead when McTominay’s stunning free-kick found the top corner on the hour mark but after a long look at the ptichiside monitor, referee Serdar Gozubuyuk deemed that defender Jack Hendry had found Spain ‘keeper Unai Simon.

Visibly frustrated by the outcome, McTominay then threw a water bottle on the floor in anger and those on social media couldn’t believe that the goal had been chalked off.

“Joke of a decision. Keeper doesn’t even claim the free either,” said one fan.

Another commented: “As an Englishman that was one of the worst decisions I’ve seen in an international match! Robbery.”

A third said: Why was that goal disallowed, because a Scotland player breathed on the keeper?”

Others took a jab at UEFA, with one fan tweeting: “Hard to deny the ‘UEFA only want the big boys in their tournaments’ brigade watching this disgrace of a referee.”

McTominay came into the game off the back of being the hero for Manchester United as his two goals in stoppage time secured a much-needed win against Brentford.
