The incident took place on Saturday

A Sheffield Wednesday fan was hospitalised after having his ear bitten by a rival supporter on Saturday, according to a report in The Mail.

A fight is reported to have broken out near Wednesday's Hillsborough Stadium before kick-off in the club's Championship clash with Millwall.

Dozens of bystanders are said to have witnessed the incident, said to have occurred near the stadium's South Stand at close to 2.50pm.

The injured supporter is said to have had stitches to repair damage to his ear, and is now recovering well.

Per The Mail, Police later confirmed they were investigating the incident, and say a 22-year-old man — believed to be a Millwall fan — was arrested.

A spokesperson, quoted in The Mail report, said: "At 2.48pm on Saturday (14 February) we received a report of an altercation on the concourse outside Hillsborough Stadium in Sheffield.

"It is reported a man assaulted another man and that the victim, a man in his 40s, sustained an injury to his ear.

"22-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assault occasioning actual bodily harm. He has been bailed pending further enquiries."

No further details regarding the incident have yet been made publicly available.
