Real Madrid star Federico Valverde allegedly punched Villarreal's Alex Baena after they were beaten by the Yellow Submarine at on Saturday night.
ESPN claim that they have been told by sources that the Uruguay international took offence to alleged derogatory remarks about his unborn child.
Valverde reportedly waited by the Villarreal players' bus after the game where he confronted Baena and asked him to repeat what was said to him on the pitch.
The midfielder's partner, Mina Bonino, revealed in February that the couple thought they had lost their child before further tests results revealed the pregnancy was healthy.
Sources said that Baena first made the comments during the two sides' Copa del Rey meeting in January, where he allegedly said to Valverde: "cry, because your child won't be born."
A source close to Valverde told Marca: "Today [Saturday] he said another similar thing to him, and Fede got heated. So he waited for him in the parking lot and told him that he was 'not messing with his family.'
"Fede never has problems with anyone and this has been for something very serious that comes from before."
Neither Villarreal or Baena have confirmed these claims, but sources say that Valverde's actions were "unacceptable".
"Fede Valverde, loutish and cowardly," tweeted Villarreal team delegate, Xisco Nadal.
The 2021 Europa League winners have reportedly spoken to Spanish police about the best course of action to take, with Baena set to decide if he wants to press charges.
Madrid are all but certain to lose out on the LaLiga title to arch rivals Barcelona after their 3-2 defeat to the Yellow Submarine on Saturday night.
