Erik ten Hag wanted to bring Danny Welbeck back to Old Trafford this summer, as per a report from The Athletic.
Man United sacked Ten Hag on Monday and are reportedly closing in on a deal to bring in Sporting CP's Ruben Amorim as his successor.
Amorim could yet be in charge for Sunday's blockbuster clash versus Chelsea, however there are still complications regarding his 'notice period' in Portugal.
Ten Hag left United 14th in the league and winless in Europe, with improvements needed by the new gaffer, who would look to fire the club back into the European positions of the Premier League.
Before Ten Hag left, it has been revealed that he wanted the signing of Brighton's Welbeck in the summer of 2024.
Welbeck played for the Red Devils between 2001 and 2014 and has been in stellar form under his new manager Fabian Hurzeler, scoring six goals in just nine Premier League matches so far this term.
It was understood that Ten Hag wanted an 'experienced striker to share the burden' with the 21-year-old Rasmus Hojlund.
The 33-year-old Welbeck was brought up in internal discussion at Old Trafford, however a move never materialised.
It was also reported that the former England international wanted to stay playing on the South Coast.
