England’s three centre-back plan comes in for criticism after Eric Dier own goal

Roy Hodgson’s decision to name just three centre-backs in his preliminary England squad came in for surprisingly little criticism.

That was because Tottenham’s Eric Dier, one of approximately 72 central midfielders in the squad, is more than capable of filling in.

Dier did just that against Australia, only to get his angles wrong and head a low cross into his own net.

It’s lucky, then, that England fans aren’t the type to overreact.
