England netball broke their Commonwealth Games record goals tally with a 94-32 demolition of Tonga in Glasgow, as the BBC reported, boosting the Roses' hopes of reaching the semi-finals.
In a must-win Pool A game at the Hydro, the 2018 champions raced into a 27-8 first-quarter lead and never relented, surpassing their previous best of 89 goals set against Sri Lanka in 2002. Goal shooter Eleanor Cardwell landed 54 from 60 attempts, with Sasha Glasgow (18) and Ella Clark (12) adding 30 between them and Olivia Tchine chipping in 10. The rout capped another summer of England drama across the major tournaments.
Victory leaves England third but level on six points with South Africa and defending champions Australia, who met later on Wednesday. The Roses boosted their goal average to 1.74, with a goal difference of 127, and face South Africa in a decisive final group game at 21:00 BST on Thursday. Tonga, who climbed to eighth in the world over the past 12 years, are out of their first Commonwealth Games.
Earlier, Scotland fell agonisingly short in a 45-43 defeat by world number four Jamaica, and must now beat Uganda heavily on Thursday to keep their own last-four hopes alive.
