A British warship stationed in the South Atlantic fired 120 live rounds off the coast of the Falkland Islands on Monday, as reported by The Independent.
The rounds are reported to have been fired as part of an exercise, as military tensions with Argentina over control of the archipelago continue to grow.
The operation was carried out by HMS Medway, a patrol vessel that is designated to guard the islands.
In a statement posted on X, the social media account for HMS Medway detailed the following: "120 rounds downrange.
"We took the opportunity for further routine training and put our 30mm Automatic Small Calibre Gun through its paces again. Practice = Precision.”
Per the report, the vessel's crew are reported to have described the drills as routine training, made in preparation for potential "future front-line operations."
The exercise is reported to have been planned as a "an essential visible deterrent," intended to reinforce the message from London of the United Kingdom's “enduring commitment” to defend all overseas territories.
