“People will have seen it and thought they were speaking for Burnley, but they really don’t.”

Burnley FC’s response to the “White Lives Matter Burnley” banner that flew above the Etihad at the start of their match against Man City last week has been firm and clear. They have, in no uncertain terms, made it clear that racism is not welcome at Turf Moor, from the club’s statement at half-time to Ben Mee’s comments after the game.

The club has been fighting a hooliganism and racism problem among their fanbase for years, with the nadir coming in 2001 as the town burned in a race riot.

But progressive steps have been taken and the club is fighting the good fight. As our many of its fans, such as Joe Golby, who set up a StopHate fundraiser after seeing the banner, so anti-racist Burnley fans could donate money to an anti-discrimination charity.

With the aim of donating as much money as the fan spent on flying the plane, the target was smashed almost immediately.
