Boxing star is only fooling himself with latest Conor McGregor swipe

Bitter much?

It’s a little hard to take Canelo Alvarez’s latest comments on Conor McGregor seriously.

Alvarez is doing press ahead of his bout against Julio Chavez Jr in May and unsurprisingly, a certain star from another discipline keeps coming up.

Conor McGregor vs Floyd Mayweather, although it has yet to be officially booked, has been dominating discussions in both boxing and MMA worlds. Despite having never competed in a professional boxing bout in his life, McGregor’s pursuit of a superfight against one of the all-time greats is stealing Canelo’s thunder.

The two-time world champion is not happy about it either.

“It would be offensive to my fans if I fought McGregor. I wouldn’t do it,” Canelo told Sports Illustrated.

“It’s a joke for boxing if (Mayweather vs McGregor) happens,” he said to Reuters.

How very noble of Canelo, looking down his nose at a superstar encroaching on his territory.

Boxing is his sport, and he doesn’t want to see it get tarnished by some blow-in trying to make a quick buck (or few million bucks).

Even if McGregor wanted to sign on the dotted line and give him a chance to make some serious money, Canelo wouldn’t do it out of fear it would offend his fans.

It’s just a shame that this is a new attitude he only recently developed, when it suited him.

Last August, before it became apparent that Mayweather was actually interested in coming out of retirement for McGregor’s offer, Canelo was singing a very different tune. He told Fight Hub that he would be more than happy to welcome ‘The Notorious’ to a boxing ring.

“If he wants to try out boxing, then any time he wants. If he wants to come over to this side of the world and try boxing, any time he wants, to see that it’s not as easy as he thinks.”

Now that McGregor has publicly stated that he only has eyes for Mayweather next, suddenly Canelo thinks the idea of fighting the UFC superstar would be offensive.

You can’t pull the wool over our eyes, Canelo.
