The German outfit have reportedly taken inspiration from RB Leipzig, who carried out a similar negotiation with former defender Dayot Upamecano.
Frenchman Upamecano had a release clause of 42.5 million euros that was included for 2021 instead of 2022, with Leipzig making him extend the deal for a further season before eventually selling him to Bayern Munich.
Haaland - who has scored 70 goals in 72 appearances for Dortmund - is currently sidelined until the new year after suffering a reoccurring hip injury.
Yet, he is still the club's top scorer by some margin - having scored 10 Bundesliga goals prior to his injury, five more than second-placed Marco Reus. The Norwegian has been linked with a host of Europe's top clubs, including Premier League sides Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool. His exit clause provides most clubs with a competitive chance to secure his signature should Dortmund fail in their attempts to tie him down to a new deal.Related links:
