Barcelona’s next home shirt will reportedly go in a very different direction

Barcelona are breaking with tradition for their next home shirt

According to an exclusive report in SPORT, the Spanish champions have given the green light to a new design which will not feature the vertical Blaugrana stripes we’ve come to expect on their home shirts.

Their 2019/20 home offering will instead feature a checkered square design – similar to that worn by the Croatian national team – which Nike are set to start work on in the near future.

Barca have almost always had vertical stripes on their home shirts, although did opt for horizontal stripes in 2015/16. Their next shirt will become the first in the club’s history not to feature any stripes at all.

Barca’s shirts have been made by Nike for over two decades, with the American sportswear giant said to be close to launching a special limited edition shirt to commemorate their anniversary. Leaked images of the special shirt shows it will be made up of seven panels – each taken from different home shirts from the last two 20 years.

Barca started their Champions League campaign with a win on Tuesday evening. Hosting PSV Eindhoven at the Camp Nou, a Lionel Messi hat-trick and another goal from Ousmane Dembele helped them to a 4-0 victory.
