This won’t go down well at the Bernabeu

Atletico Madrid got the better of Real Madrid in the European Super Cup on Wednesday night. With the two teams level at 2-2 at the end of 90 minutes, extra time goals from Saul and Koke saw Diego Simeone’s side claim victory – partly making up for the two Champions League final defeats to their city rivals in 2014 and 2016.

Following the presentation in Tallinn, many of Atleti’s players marked the victory with celebratory posts on their social media channels. Most were the kind of things you’d expect – Diego Godin, for example, choosing to post an image of he and his teammates lifting the trophy.

Antoine Griezmann went with an almost identical image on his Instagram page, although also chose to follow this with another post on his Instagram Stories which generated considerably more attention.

CAMPEONES ? ? 3/3

The French international shared an animated picture of him sitting on top of a throne. Behind him is Real Madrid captain, Sergio Ramos, who is placing a crown on Griezmann’s head.

Diego Costa had opened the scoring inside the first minute of the game in Estonia, only for Karim Benzema to draw Real level by nodding home Gareth Bale’s cross.

Ramos, a scorer in both Champions League finals against Atleti, later gave Real a second-half lead from the penalty spot before Costa tapped home a second to send the game to extra-time.

Both Madrid sides kick off their domestic season in the next week. Real host Getafe, in a game that’s expected to be Thibaut Courtois’ debut, while Atleti begin the season at Valencia on Monday night.
