Sir Alex Ferguson has undergone emergency surgery after being admitted to hospital yesterday.

Ferguson remains in a serious condition according to several reports, having been taken to hospital via ambulance on Friday. The legendary former Manchester United manager had been expressing concern about his health on Thursday, according to the Times, and was taken to Macclesfield district hospital early on Friday morning. The 76-year-old was subsequently transported to Salford Royal, where he underwent emergency surgery. Ferguson's son, Darren, was not in the dugout for  Doncaster's final game of the season against Wigan as news emerged of a "severe family issue." A statement released by Manchester United reads as follows: "Sir Alex Ferguson has undergone emergency surgery today for a brain haemorrhage. The procedure has gone very well but he needs a period of intensive care to optimise his recovery. His family request privacy in this matter."
