Sky News host must regret trying to sandbag Jeremy Corbyn on live TV

Paul Moore

No change from the Labour leader.

As you may have seen from the recent front pages, certain newspapers are attacking Jermey Corbyn following his recent interview with Sky’s Sophie Ridge.

During the interview, Ridge asked the Labour leader about an article from the Labour Briefing magazine that he wrote for during the 1980s.  Using this as a pretext, she then asked him about the IRA’s bombing campaign, most notably the Brighton bombing which killed 5 people.

To begin with, Ridge was under the mistaken belief that Corbyn was editor of the magazine when it ran a controversial piece after the Brighton bombing.

As you can see below, the Labour leader offered a calm and succinct answer. However, that wasn’t the end of the issue, or line of questioning.

Despite the line of questioning, Corbyn did in fact condemn the IRA and all forms of terrorism. “Look, bombing is wrong. Of course all bombing is wrong. Of course I condemn it,” he said (11:20 mark in the full interview below)

Despite Corbyn’s answer, Ridge continued with her line of questioning regarding the IRA to which Corbyn said: “All bombing has to be condemned and you have to bring about a peace process. In the ’80s, Britain was looking for a military solution in Ireland that was clearly never going to work, ask anyone in the British army at that time. Therefore, you have to seek a peace process and you condemn the violence of those that laid bombs that killed large numbers of innocent people. And I do.”

Despite his feelings being clear on the issue, he was asked again to condemn the IRA’s bombing which he said: ”I condemn all the bombing by both the loyalists and the IRA.”

As things currently stand, Labour is up seven points in three weeks, halving the Conservative lead. It’s also worth nothing that the fallout from the ‘dementia tax’ issue has yet to be fully factored in also.
